The Need for Teamwork In Mission Work. According to recent studies, the critical need in just about any endeavor is digitally competent leaders. This does not imply that the leader themselves must be engaged in the digital world, but it does infer that the leader must surround themselves with digitally talented people. Leadership today is now more than ever defined as a team sport. The do it yourself approach to leadership is taking a back seat to team driven leadership. The team approach still needs a captain, but the development is embodied in team effort. Watch who you surround yourself with and watch what you ask them to do. Think and ask very important questions of them and yourself - where do you feel God has called you to and what specific gifts do you think God has gifted you with? How do you see that helping the overall vision and mission of the organization? Tell me, how we can best leverage you and your talents for the ultimate success of the organization? Teams are functionally diverse. The well of inspiration, thought, and action is very deep. In mission work, it is so important we don’ t try to fit a square peg into a round hole. We must always seek to be optimal in our exercise of God’s gifts. It is a much better idea to work toward a goal of placing a round peg in a round hole. Today many frustrated volunteers are attempting to work successfully at things they are not gifted or are vented to do. This does nothing but discourage and slow down the work. But, you may be thinking...what if I currently do not have someone gifted in an area that I am not gifted in? Then you for now must do it, with your eyes and ears open, while finding someone who is gifted and likes to do what you yourself find difficult and not easy and free flowing to do. Make it a priority to find those people and fund those people to keep growing and expanding the organization. The key is to make it a priority. You probably have people around you being underutilized with just the right “unknown gift”, but have yet to be asked to join “ the team” (Outsiders on the inside.) Quick changes in role or positioning can make a wall flower into a rock star. Leaders, get your hands and hearts dirty and make it a point to identify, communicate and just plain care. It's probably the single most important thing for a leader to truly be successful - Get to know your team. P.S. Never neglect talent or inspired gifting; these people will always find somewhere else to use the gifts God has given them. Your loss will be someone else’s gain.
