Great leaders are not the ones barking orders and demanding subordinates to follow. The very best leaders gain their power by giving it away. They delegate and empower others to lead. The best leaders always define with clarity the vision. Without that, empowerment by itself would lead to a very disruptive situation. Knowledgeable leaders will strive to ensure that knowledge, skills and expectations will be defined for those they lead. The leader must be able to effectively pass on leadership to see their organization, business or ministry grow. Delegate or stagnate. Ambiguity in direction leads to confusion in the ranks and is the enemy of empowerment. Leaders must be able to insure the followers clearly understand their specific role and responsibility. In my experience, many leading businesses and leading churches are too caught up in leading, and never giving it up so others can lead to let the organization grow and prosper. Sometimes it is time to give others an opportunity to lead. In my early years of ministry, I was very successful and things were moving right along, but I felt that I was standing in the way of some very strong up and coming leadership . After much prayer and consideration, I decided to step aside so another great leader could spread her wings. As a result, the ministry has doubled in size and effectiveness. In another case, I found it necessary to encourage and celebrate a new director. I have encouraged boards to be established to control the organization, all for growth of the vision. In missions, I have always encouraged the local leadership . President Ronald Regan had a sign on his desk that read, “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he does not mind who gets the credit.” 1. Learn to share the credit with others and give way to great up and coming leadership, as they bring new and exciting life to the organization. 2. Learn how to accomplish the work through others. 3. Keep painting the picture and learn how to articulate the vision and mission. 4. Leaders are giving up formal authority to truly empower their people to take initiative. 5. Give up and coming Leaders some latitude and use their judgement to make some of the decisions. Put people in place that can help your organization to a position where they will accomplish great things. Grow the vision “ by giving up to get more.”
