" You never, never never never never never leave a meeting without setting another meeting."
I can't tell you how often I see people expend great amounts of energy to get an appointment or to put on a meeting but have no next step in place. So sad to watch and even sadder to be a part of.
The phrases I'll get
to you with that or will let you know when we will meet to further discuss that. Are lose ends you do not want in your vocabulary.
Recently I traveled a great distance and was asked to speak to a group. Which I did ..things went well and my passion connected with theirs ..I felt everything was building to a powerful crescendo. Then the question came ..so when and where will the training take place. To my amazement this was the answer from those who invited and invested so much in my time. Well we will get back to you on that ...we still haven't identified a location or a time, but if you will give us your number and pertinent info we will contact you once we have our meeting plans. The wind behind the sails went dead.
Think about what now has to be done..the meeting still needs to be planned but even worse another phone call / calls or email has to be made and we could not leave anything behind as reminder. With every hour that passes schedules begin to inference and the passion declines.
I had another time I was asked to travel again a great distance.. Drove through a community and visited pastors ..they all said yes we want to do this ...the person with me was excited. The pastors said when do we start? The response deflated everyone..I don't know we will need to get a training team into the area and I will have to work on that! I thought to myself, what? Why? Needless to say the leader has never started anything because now he is trying to reach them by phone 2 months after the fact. Always strike at the top of the emotional experience!
Always have the next meeting prepared and use the phrase " this is what you need to do next. " this is so important and does take so planning.
