Whales and Minnows In life, it is important to have a fish bowl with minnows, but every once in a while it is important to chase a whale. If you want to grow it is important to consciously pursue people who are powerful and what I refer to as movers and shakers. We often peer from a distance at these people and think they actually put their pants on differently than we do. The fact is they put their pants on one leg at a time just like you and I do. People spend money on magazines or watch television watching these people from afar. The fact is these people can in so cases be enormously helpful in our lives. They can open doors and instruct us in ways to be more successful in what ever we have been called by God to do in in our lives. There is room in our lives for whales, even though we may be minnows in training to be whales. These movers and shakers are usually more accomplished and have stuck their skyscraper life's into the sky through all the same challenges and frustration we have all faced. They are often influencers and play a certain role in our society. They usually are dreamers and visionary people. This is not about being a groupie or a manipulator. This is a genuine interest in learning, giving and attachment. This is not a time for fawning or too much attention; this is a time to develop trust. You can not approach these people with ulterior motives. You must show a personal interest in them and not a public or perceived image of them. An interesting fact about most of these people is that they are lonely. This is a great thing to remember when speaking with them. They are people and if God has them cross your path it is for a reason.. If you want to meet these people become a joiner. They are usually speaking to groups pertaining to their interests. Look for ways to meet people who have accomplished more than you have - Iron sharpens iron. I have always made it a point to seek out movers and shakers in the endeavors I have been called to. Whenever there is an opportunity to join a board or go to a business or political conference, I am there. To be honest, not every time has it worked out, but the times it has have allowed me a glimpse or open the door to a whole new world of contacts and friends. Recently I attended a conference in Washington D.C. and had the opportunity to meet a number of the movers and shakers in the political world, as well as the spiritual world. While eating lunch I was asked, "What do you do? What brings you to this conference?" I had an opportunity to share the ministry I am currently involved with and was asked to come to a small breakout meeting at the confrence to share the opportunity with a coalition of leaders from various states. I have been blessed over and over to see what those contacts have meant to the ministry and to my life. As I went from booth to booth of other ministries represented at these type events has allowed me to expand my contact list. I believe we are all minnows developing into whales. Recruit a whale or two and watch things change for your ministry your business your life in general.
